Mariana Tavares is an Invited Assistant Professor at the Institute of Political Studies (IEP) of the Catholic University of Portugal (UCP). She holds a PhD in Law from King's College London, an LLM from Duke University, a DES from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, and a Law degree from UCP's Porto School. Her research focuses on international law, competition policy, and global governance. She serves as a UN consultant on competition issues, an integrated researcher at IEP's Research Centre, and a partner at Cruz Vilaça Advogados.
She previously served as a référendaire at the European Union's Court of Justice and held leadership roles at the Competition Authority. Her professional contributions include chairing European and International Competition Network working groups, and collaborating with BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre, OECD, UNCTAD, and the EU-China Trade project. She co-authored a seminal 2022 Oxford University Press book on global competition law.
Teaching responsibilities include modules on International Public Law within the BA in Political Science and International Relations program. Her work bridges legal scholarship, policy analysis, and practical regulatory governance at international institutions.
