معرفی
Marian Nebelin is a full Professor of Ancient History and the Reception of Antiquity at the Institute for European Studies and History within the Faculty of Philosophy at Chemnitz University of Technology. He has held this position since 2023, following a Junior Professorship at the same institution from 2015 to 2023. He also serves in key academic governance roles, including Chairman of the Examination Board for the BA European History and Deputy Chairman of the Study Commissions for both the BA and MA programs in European History. Additionally, he is Chairman of the Herrnhut Academy for Political and Cultural Education e.V.
His research focuses on European history, particularly the interplay between antiquity and modernity. Key areas include the cultural history of politics in antiquity, political intellectual history (especially concerning classical Athenian democracy, Cicero, Walter Benjamin, Stefan Zweig, and Reinhart Koselleck), the reception and historiography of antiquity (including figures like Pierre de Coubertin and Ernst Curtius), historical comparatism (notably agonistic economies in ancient and modern Olympic Games), palimpsest and spatial theory, and Jewish history across ancient and 20th-century contexts.
The analysis of his 15 most recent publications reveals a consistent interdisciplinary focus on how ancient political and cultural concepts are reinterpreted in modern ideological and national contexts. His work frequently bridges classical philology, intellectual history, semiotics, and political theory, with recurring themes of conflict, identity formation, and the transformation of historical memory. He often employs comparative methodologies to analyze continuity and rupture between antiquity and modernity.

He is also a co-leader of the long-term research project "The Olympic Games and Politics" with Dr. Hendrik Thoß. His editorial work includes founding or co-founding several academic book series, indicating strong leadership in scholarly communication.
