Maria do Carmo Piçarra Ramos is a Researcher at the NOVA Communication Institute (ICNOVA) and Assistant Professor at Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa. She holds a PhD in Communication Sciences from NOVA University of Lisbon. Her research focuses on Portuguese colonial cinema, Salazarist propaganda, and filmic archives. Notable works include Projectar a ordem. Cinema do Povo e propaganda salazarista 1935–1954 and Azuis ultramarinos. Propaganda colonial e censura no cinema do Estado Novo. She co-edited the trilogies Angola, o nascimento de uma nação and (Re)Imagining African Independence.
Her academic background includes a postdoctoral fellowship (2013–2018) on representations of empire in cinema, funded by Fundação Oriente (2018–2020) for research on 'Portuguese Asia' in film archives. She actively participates in academic activities, including invited talks and editorial roles, and coordinates film projects. She received the Impulse Fellowship in 2018.
