Maria Wurzinger

Maria Wurzinger is an Associate Professor at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), affiliated with the Institute of Development Research and Institute of Livestock Sciences. Her work focuses on animal breeding, livestock genetics, and climate change adaptation through community-based programs in Africa, Latin America, and Asia.

Her research spans genetic improvement of sheep, goats, guinea pigs, and South American camelids, emphasizing sustainable food systems and farmer-led innovation. Recent projects include genomic selection in alpacas, climate resilience in Peruvian Andes, and dairy sustainability tools.

She has led over 20 international projects funded by the European Commission, Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), and private partners, addressing livestock productivity, genetic resource conservation, and agricultural education in low-income regions.
