Dr. Maria J. Veri is a Professor of Kinesiology and Coordinator of the Kinesiology graduate program at San Francisco State University (SFSU), located at Gym 126. She holds a PhD in Cultural Studies in Education and a Master’s in Human Performance and Sport Studies from the University of Tennessee. Her research focuses on gender, sexuality, race, and politics in sport; critical pedagogy for social justice; and intersections of food, sport, and identity. She co-authored Gridiron Gourmet: Gender and Food at the Football Tailgate (2019) and has published widely on topics like sport history, dairy industry promotions, and Oakland’s Raider Nation.
Her teaching spans courses such as Sport in America, Culture, Gender, & Movement, and Social Justice in Sport. She actively contributes to organizations like NASSH, ASFS, and WSPECW. Current projects include editing Setting the Table: Essays at the Intersection of Sport and Food (forthcoming).
