Dr. Maria Tranter serves as an Assistant for Premodern History in the Department of History at the University of Basel, Faculty of Humanities. Based in office 208 at Hirschgässlein 21, 4051 Basel, Switzerland, she can be contacted at m.tranter@unibas.ch or by phone at +41 61 207 46 58.
Her research focuses on Medieval and Premodern History, with specialization in Marriage History, Social History, and Historiography. Dr. Tranter is currently conducting a Postdoc Project titled 'A historiographical examination of medieval marriage. Marriage: Medieval to Modern,' exploring how marriage has been conceptualized and represented across historical periods.
She coordinates the 'Current Research on the History of Premodernity' research colloquium, which examines continuities and discontinuities across traditional epochal boundaries between the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period. This biweekly forum features presentations from doctoral students and international scholars, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue on premodern societies.
As a Research Fellow, Dr. Tranter contributes to the Department of History's Middle Ages research area, which is one of eight specialized research focuses within the department that employs approximately 150 staff members and serves 850 students at bachelor's and master's levels.
