Maria Söderberg is an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer at the School of Social Work, Lund University, with a research focus on ageing and eldercare. She is affiliated with research on freedom of choice in eldercare, multi-morbidity care coordination, and food poverty. Her work contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to reduced inequalities and zero hunger.
Research Interests: Maria Söderberg’s research centers on social work with older people, especially around relocation decisions, dignity in care, and the social dynamics of eldercare systems. Recently, she has expanded into food poverty and food charity, exploring how dignity is preserved in emergency food aid contexts. Her work emphasizes the emotional and ethical dimensions of professional-client interactions.
The recent publications show a strong trend toward examining dignity, shame, and professional ethics in social services—particularly in eldercare and food assistance. These works are grounded in qualitative analysis and critical discourse, often focusing on Sweden and the Nordic welfare model. They highlight tensions between individual agency and systemic constraints.
