Maria Succi-Hempstead is a Senior Lecturer in Italian Studies at Smith College, a position she has held since 2006. She serves as the Language Coordinator and Co-director of the Translation Concentration, overseeing all language courses and supervising department tutors. Additionally, she is the Faculty Liaison for the Smith in Florence Program and a Board Member of the Massachusetts Italian Teachers Association.
Her educational qualifications are:
- Laurea in Lingue e Letterature Straniere Moderne, Università di Bologna, Italy
- M.A., University of Kent, Canterbury, England
- M.A. in Advanced Design for Teaching Italian Language and Culture to non-native speakers, Università Ca’ Foscari, Venice, Italy
Dr. Succi-Hempstead's research centers on second-language acquisition and pedagogy, with a focus on developing innovative teaching methodologies and materials. She actively explores the integration of new technologies to enhance student engagement and foster intercultural competence both inside and outside the classroom.
Her scientific recognition includes:

Her initiatives have received funding from the Five Colleges Mellon Blended Learning Initiative, the Five College Consortium, and a Curricular Enhancement Grant from the Smith College Center for the Environment, Ecological Design and Sustainability (CEEDS). In her advisory capacity, she mentors teaching fellows and organizes conversation sessions and social events for language students. As the Faculty Liaison for the Smith in Florence Program, she works closely with the Office for International Study and the program directors in Florence to prepare students for study abroad experiences, having directed the Smith Program Abroad in Florence during 2010-11.
