Maria Stamatopoulou

Dr Maria Stamatopoulou is an Associate Professor in Classical Art and Archaeology at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Lincoln College. Her expertise lies in the archaeology and art of Greece during the first millennium BC, with particular focus on Thessaly and Macedonia.

Research Interests

Maria Stamatopoulou’s research is centred on the material culture of Greek communities from the Archaic to the Late Hellenistic periods. She explores funerary practices, the archaeology of sanctuaries, terracotta production, ancient painting and jewellery, as well as the use of archival sources to reconstruct past societies. Her regional specialisation in Thessaly and Macedonia allows her to investigate questions of identity, religion, and domestic life across a broad chronological span.

Within these broad themes, she has developed interests in:

• Iconographic analysis of grave goods and votive offerings
• Gender and identity as expressed through mortuary assemblages
• Material religion and the organisation of sacred space
• Technological and stylistic developments in terracotta and painted media

Doctoral Supervision

Professor Stamatopoulou currently supervises four DPhil projects and has previously guided five successful doctorates. Her students work on topics ranging from Hellenistic mould-made bowls and sacral landforms in Anatolia to childhood in ancient Thessaly and Thracian chamber tombs. These projects collectively advance the understanding of Greek archaeology in northern Greece and neighbouring regions.
