Maria Serafina Madonia is an Associate Professor (SSD INF/01) at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (DMI) of the University of Catania since January 1, 2022. Previously, she was a tenured researcher at the same department from May 1996 to December 2021. She graduated in Applied Mathematics from the University of Palermo in 1985 and earned her PhD in Mathematics (III cycle) from a consortium of universities (Palermo, Catania, Messina) in 1991.
Research Interests: Her work focuses on formal language theory, particularly algebraic and combinatorial problems in automata theory, two-dimensional languages, and coding. Key research areas include:
- Recognizable two-dimensional languages
- Picture codes
- Automata on unary alphabets
- Word covering
- Z-monoids and z-codes
- Rational relations
- Reducibility of binary trees
Professional Contributions: She has served as a scientific reviewer for numerous international journals and conferences since 1998 and participated in research projects funded by MIUR, INDAM, and the University of Catania.
