Maria Ntona is a Lecturer at the University of Strathclyde Law School, contributing to the Strathclyde Centre for Environmental Law and Governance (SCELG) and the Centre for the Study of Human Rights Law (CSHRL). She holds an LLB from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and an LLM in Global Environment and Climate Change Law from the University of Edinburgh. Her research focuses on environmental justice, rights-based approaches to governance, oceans governance, and spatial planning. She has provided legal consultancy to the CBD and FAO, and her doctoral research explores human rights-based approaches to marine spatial planning.
Her expertise aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly environmental governance and human rights. Notable projects include co-leading the 'Sustainability and Tourism' research agenda and participating in the Strathclyde Centre for Doctoral Training in Human Rights-based Decision-Making. She remains active in legal networks like the Scottish Universities Legal Network on Europe (SULNE) and the Global Network for the Study of Human Rights and Environment (GNHRE).
Recent work includes exploring knowledge-power dynamics in EU marine governance and socio-ecological justice narratives. Grants include funding for human rights-based decision-making frameworks. She has organized conferences on sustainable tourism and reviewed academic journals, demonstrating her commitment to advancing interdisciplinary legal scholarship.
