Maria Nieswand

Maria Nieswand is a researcher and academic with extensive experience in energy economics, efficiency analysis, and sustainability policy. She is currently Head of the IOER Research Data Centre at the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development in Dresden, Germany, a position she has held since 2024. Previously, she was a Senior Expert at the German Energy Agency (dena), Head of Team Energy and Sustainability in Leipzig, and a Lecturer in Economics at Loughborough University, UK.

Her research centers on efficiency and productivity analysis, particularly in energy and public infrastructure sectors. She applies advanced econometric and nonparametric methods (e.g., DEA) to evaluate regulatory frameworks, utility performance, and environmental impacts. Her interdisciplinary work spans energy economics, public administration, and sustainability science, with a focus on empirical assessments of policy interventions.

Her recent publications in journals like Energy Economics, European Journal of Operational Research, and The Energy Journal reflect a consistent focus on electricity distribution, regulatory design, and sustainability transitions.
