Maria Luz Suarez Castiñeira

Maria Luz Suarez Castiñeira is a Professor at the University of Deusto, specializing in Comparative Literature and European Integration. She holds a PhD in Comparative European Literature from the University of the Basque Country (1992, Cum Laude by Unanimity). Her research focuses on the cultural dimension of European integration, cultural policies, and securitization discourses. She has directed 7 doctoral theses and numerous master’s theses, and actively participates in interdisciplinary research through the Institute of European Studies and the journal Cuadernos Europeos de Deusto.

• PhD in Comparative European Literature, University of the Basque Country (1992)

Research Interests:

Her current priorities include analyzing cultural policies' role in European integration and the rhetorical construction of political/cultural identities. She has contributed to 6 European projects on intercultural dialogue, multilingualism, and European citizenship.

Administration & Outreach:

• Directed the Institute of European Studies (2010–2015)
• Co-edits Cuadernos Europeos de Deusto, an interdisciplinary journal on the EU

Teaching:

She teaches courses in Modern Languages, International Relations, and the Erasmus Mundus Master Programme Euroculture.
