Professor Maria Lonsdale is the Head of the School of Design and Director of PACE at the University of Leeds. She holds a Licenciatura in Visual Communication (ESAD, Portugal) and a PhD in Typography and Graphic Communication (University of Reading, UK). Her research focuses on user-centred design, particularly in healthcare, security, education, and typography. She leads over 20 research projects, including improving patient recovery through design interventions and enhancing cybersecurity communication. As Editor-in-Chief of Visible Language, she bridges academic and applied design. Awards include SFHEA and MISTD. Her work spans VR tools for education, VLE design guidelines, and sustainable fashion communication.
