Maria Lechtarova is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Anthropology at New York University (NYU), affiliated with the College of Arts and Science. Her research focuses on death, semiotic anthropology, nostalgia, commemoration practices, visual anthropology, public signage, consumption, media ethnography, globalization, and Eastern Europe. She contributes to interdisciplinary discussions within cultural and social anthropology, particularly in Eastern European contexts.
Her work bridges theoretical frameworks with empirical studies, exploring topics such as public memory through signage and the semiotics of commemoration. She is part of NYU's broader anthropology community, which includes programs in human skeletal biology, culture and media, and global courses.
