Maria Kristina Dorotan, MD is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Yale School of Medicine, where she serves as a neurologist at the Yale Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. She specializes in caring for patients with seizures, managing their care from initial diagnosis through treatment, and offering complex medical management when necessary.
Dr. Dorotan completed her medical education at the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine & Surgery, followed by an internship and neurology residency at Temple University Hospital. She then pursued specialized fellowship training in Clinical Neurophysiology and Epilepsy at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Harvard School of Medicine.
Her research and clinical interests focus on women's neurology and epilepsy, tumor-related epilepsy, and medically refractory epilepsy. Dr. Dorotan uses in-depth evaluation and multiple modalities to understand seizures in patients who have responded poorly to anti-seizure medications, offering treatment options such as surgery or neuromodulation.
Dr. Dorotan's publications reflect her expertise in epilepsy, particularly in brain tumor-related epilepsy and novel treatment approaches. Her recent work examines perampanel for peritumoral hyperexcitability in high-grade glioma, patient-centered management of tumor-related epilepsy, and the current state of the epilepsy drug and device pipeline. Her research bridges neurology, oncology, and pharmacology, with a strong emphasis on improving patient outcomes through innovative approaches.

Dr. Dorotan is actively involved in professional organizations, serving as Co-Chair for the Epilepsy in the Childbearing Ages through Menopause Consortium (since December 2023) and as an Expert for the Integrating Neurological Sex and Gender Issues in Global Health Training (INSIGHT Network) (since February 2025). She is committed to advancing women's neurology through these roles and her clinical practice.
As part of the Yale Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, Dr. Dorotan works within a multidisciplinary team that offers comprehensive management for patients with difficult-to-treat seizures. The center provides evaluation and treatment options including surgical interventions and neuromodulation technologies designed to alter nerve activity and decrease seizure burden.
