Maria Jose Gómez Torres

Maria Jose Gómez Torres is a Professor and currently serves as the Director of the Biotechnology Department at the University of Alicante. She has held various administrative positions including Department Secretary multiple times between 2004 and 2022 before becoming Department Director in December 2022.

Her educational background includes a PhD in Biology from Miguel Hernández University (1999) and a Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Alicante (1995).

Professor Gómez Torres specializes in reproductive biology with a focus on sperm physiology, human embryology, and assisted reproductive technologies. Her research examines the ultrastructural characteristics of gametes, cryopreservation techniques, and the impact of environmental pollutants on fertility. She has made significant contributions to understanding cellular communication during in vitro fertilization and developing improved sperm selection methods for assisted reproductive technologies.

Her research has resulted in numerous publications in high-impact journals including Human Reproduction, Journal of Reproduction and Development, and Environmental Science and Pollution Research. Her work shows a strong trend toward improving assisted reproductive techniques through better understanding of gamete biology and the development of novel cryopreservation methods.

She has been involved in multiple research projects including "Bioensayos para el estudio de la capacidad fecundante del espermatozoide humano" (2014-2015) and "Alteraciones celulares y moleculares del espermatozoide humano tras la inmovilización espermática previa a la microinyección intracitoplasmática" (2009-2010), serving as principal investigator. She has also participated in 9 transfer projects in the past five years, including work with IVF SPAIN, SL.

She leads research within the Cellular, Tissue, Evolutionary and Reproductive Biology (BioTER) research group at the University of Alicante, focusing on cellular and molecular aspects of human reproduction.
