Maria Fadiman is a Professor of Geography at Florida Atlantic University and a National Geographic Emerging Explorer whose work bridges human cultures and plant ecology. She conducts immersive field research with indigenous communities globally, focusing on conservation through the lens of traditional knowledge systems and sustainability practices.
Her research portfolio centers on ethnobotany and environmental anthropology, with significant projects including collaborative documentation of the Ha people's plant knowledge in Tanzania (funded by a National Geographic Genographic Legacy Grant) and multidisciplinary studies of oil exploration impacts on Amazonian indigenous cultures.
