Maria E. Orive is a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Kansas and serves as Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Her research focuses on theoretical population genetics, particularly examining the evolutionary implications of complex life histories with an emphasis on clonal reproduction. She has made significant contributions to understanding how reproductive strategies affect genetic structure, adaptation, and evolutionary processes.
Dr. Orive received her undergraduate degree from Stanford University and her Ph.D. from the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. She completed postdoctoral training at the University of Georgia with Dr. Marjorie Asmussen and was an NSF NATO Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Edinburgh with Dr. Nick Barton. She joined the University of Kansas faculty in 1997 and has since established herself as a leading researcher in theoretical population genetics.
Her research interests include:
- Evolutionary theory and population genetics of organisms with complex life histories
- Life history evolution and the evolution of senescence
- Relationship of population structure and life-history attributes to gene flow and genetic diversity
- Use of multilocus genotypic data in analyzing gene flow and hybrid zones
- Within-host viral population dynamics
Dr. Orive's work employs mathematical models to investigate how complexities such as clonal and asexual reproduction, non-random mating, and different patterns of dispersal affect genetic structure. Her research spans evolutionary rescue in changing environments, spatial adaptation in partially clonal organisms, and within- and between-host pathogen dynamics, with applications in conservation biology, epidemiology, and understanding fundamental evolutionary processes.
She teaches courses including Principles of Genetics, Introduction to Biostatistics, Senior Seminar in Genetics, and Population Genetics. Dr. Orive mentors both graduate and undergraduate students in the Orive Lab, where current research includes mathematical modeling of Neisseria meningitidis and computer simulations exploring clonal interference effects.
Her major collaborations include:
- R.D. Holt and M. Barfield at the University of Florida on models of structured populations
- F.B. Agusto at KU and M.C.A. Leite at the University of South Florida on nested models of multi-host pathogen systems
