Maria De Fatima Fonseca Domingues

Dr. Maria De Fatima Fonseca Domingues is an Assistant Professor in Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology at Khalifa University. With over 15 years of research experience, she specializes in photonic sensing solutions for biomedical and eHealth applications, particularly focusing on optical fiber-based sensors, Fiber Bragg gratings, wearables, and the Internet of Biomedical Things.

• Education: PhD in Physics Engineering and MSc in Applied Physics, both from the University of Aveiro, Portugal

Her work spans physical rehabilitation technologies, home monitoring systems for elders, and fiber-optic sensor innovations. She has authored/co-authored over 130 publications, including books and high-impact journal articles, and was recognized as a top 2% most-cited scientist in 2024. Dr. Domingues actively supervises undergraduate and graduate students in laboratory and project settings.

She leads or co-leads national and EU-funded projects, including the Khalifa University FSU Grant – POWER and RIG 2024 project MoRehab. Her editorial roles include membership in Journal of Sensors (Wiley), Alexandria Journal of Engineering (Elsevier), and Frontiers in Sensors (MDPI). As an IEEE Senior Member, she contributes to technical committees, conference organizing bodies, and serves as secretary of the IEEE EMBS Portuguese Chapter.
