Maria Cutumisu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology at McGill University's Faculty of Education, with a joint appointment as Adjunct Professor in Computing Science at the University of Alberta. Her research integrates computing science and education, focusing on machine learning applications in educational contexts, game-based assessments, and feedback processing. She directs the Assessment of Learning and Transfer (ALERT) lab, where she employs psychophysiological techniques like eye-tracking to study learning processes.
Education includes:
- Ph.D. in Computing Science, University of Alberta (2009)
- M.Sc. in Computing Science, University of Alberta (2003)
- B.Sc. in Computer Science, University of Bucharest (1998)
Research spans educational data mining, computational thinking assessments, and serious games for healthcare education. Her work investigates how student choices in game-based environments affect learning outcomes and mindset development.
Recent publications demonstrate strong trends in machine learning applications for educational assessment, computational thinking measurement, and healthcare simulation training. Her work frequently appears in high-impact educational technology and medical education journals.
Scientific awards include:
- Teaching recognitions from McGill University (2024-2025)
- Graduate Supervision Award (2021)
- Multiple undergraduate researcher awards
- International conference best paper awards
- Research fellowships and scholarships
She leads multiple tri-council grants including NSERC Discovery Grants and SSHRC Insight Grants. As Principal Investigator, she has secured over $1M in research funding. She mentors graduate students through the ALERT lab and teaches courses in data analysis, educational data mining, and artificial intelligence in education.
Affiliations include: Centre for Research in Applied Measurement and Evaluation (CRAME), Mila Quebec AI Institute, and Women and Children's Health Research Institute (WCHRI).
