Maria Beatrice Magnani is a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Geological Sciences at Southern Methodist University (SMU). Her research focuses on lithospheric seismology, near-surface seismology, and tectonics, with a particular emphasis on induced seismicity, glacial erosion, and crustal structure. She holds a Ph.D. in Lithospheric Seismology from the Università degli Studi di Perugia.
Her teaching includes courses such as Exploration Seismology (GEOL6396), Earth Systems (GEOL1301), and Structural Interpretation of Seismic Reflection Profiles (GEOL6340). She leads research projects on Patagonian seismotectonics and paleoseismology, as highlighted by her recent postdoctoral fellowship recruitment. Magnani has contributed to major initiatives like the Eastern North American Margin Community Seismic Experiment, combining onshore and offshore seismic data to study continental rifting processes.
Her research integrates high-resolution seismic reflection techniques with geophysical modeling to investigate fault behavior, glacial-isostatic adjustments, and the interplay between tectonics and climate. Notable projects include studying induced seismicity in Texas and Oklahoma linked to wastewater injection, and analyzing glacial retreat impacts in Patagonia.
Publications span seismotectonic mechanisms, crustal structure analysis, and big data applications in seismology. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to understanding Earth’s dynamic systems, with a focus on translating seismic data into actionable insights for hazard assessment and geological modeling.
