Maria Barelli

Maria Barelli serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture and Design (DAD) at the Polytechnic University of Turin, where she has established herself as a leading scholar in architectural history and technology. Her academic career spans over a decade of continuous involvement with the university's doctoral programs.

Her research interests focus on building refurbishment, construction history, social housing, and twentieth century architecture, with specific expertise in technological and environmental design of architecture. These interests manifest in her scholarly work examining historical construction techniques and their relevance to contemporary architectural practice.

Professor Barelli's recent publications (all from 2024) demonstrate a consistent scholarly trajectory centered on Italian architectural history, particularly examining 20th century architects like Jaretti and Luzi, building materials including marble, and construction processes. Her work bridges historical analysis with practical applications in architectural conservation and design.

As Scientific Director of the Memorandum of Understanding between the DAD and the Poroton Italia Consortium (2024-2029) and former Scientific Manager of the Urban Qualification Project for the Le Vallette district in Turin (2016), she has secured significant research funding that supports her academic work and provides opportunities for students.

Barelli actively participates in the Construction History Group as a member of its Steering Committee since 2021 and contributes to the Institute of Mountain Architecture (IAM) research center. Her teaching spans both undergraduate and graduate levels, with consistent involvement in the Architecture. History and Design PhD program since 2014.
