Maria Andersson Vogel is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Criminology, Stockholm University, with a PhD in social work. Her academic work bridges criminology and social work with a strong focus on vulnerable youth populations and gender dynamics within institutional settings.
Her primary research interests include:
- Societal control and discipline of young people with behavioral problems
- Gender dynamics and power structures in institutional care settings
- Compulsory care systems and secure institutional care for youth
- Victimology, particularly regarding sexual abuse in secure care settings
- Construction of young femininities in vulnerable life situations
Dr. Vogel employs both quantitative and qualitative research methods with a consistent gender perspective. She is particularly interested in questions of normality and deviance as they relate to disciplinary measures. Her current research portfolio includes multiple significant projects examining girls' living conditions in deprived areas, girls' involvement in criminal gangs, and the use of coercive measures in secure care institutions.
She is an active member of the Victimological Research Group established in 2021 at Stockholm University's Department of Criminology, which conducts research on victims of crime from various perspectives. Dr. Vogel also contributes to major research programs including 'The child's journey through the social child care' and 'The social services' work with crime prevention,' demonstrating her commitment to translating research into practical social service applications.
Among her upcoming work, she and a colleague will initiate a 2025 follow-up study of young adults with a history of compulsory care, continuing her longitudinal examination of care systems and their long-term impacts.
