Margrethe C. Stang is an Associate Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Department of Art and Media Studies. Her research focuses on medieval Scandinavian art, particularly Norwegian panel paintings (c. 1250–1350), iconography, and the role of art in religious practices. She holds a PhD from NTNU (2009) with a dissertation on medieval altar frontals. Her work explores themes such as patronage, minority representation, and the interplay between art and liturgical contexts.
Stang’s research interests include the iconography of St. Olav, Scandinavian wall/ceiling paintings, and the visual culture of medieval churches. Notable contributions address anti-Semitic imagery in Urnes Stave Church, Jewish and Muslim depictions in Norwegian art, and the material culture of medieval churches. She has co-edited anthologies like The Medieval Scandinavian Art Reader and contributed to exhibitions such as Sea Ivories.
Her publications span academic chapters, museum catalogues, and popular articles. She advises master’s theses on topics ranging from medieval sculpture to architectural history. Teaching courses include European art history and architectural history. Stang is affiliated with the Research Centre for Medieval Studies and actively participates in public lectures and cultural preservation initiatives.
