Margot Versteeg is Department Chair and Professor in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese at the University of Kansas, where she has taught since 2004. She previously directed KU's Humanities Program and has established herself as a leading scholar in 19th and early 20th century Spanish cultural studies. Her academic journey began in The Netherlands, where she studied Translation Studies and Hispanic Literature at the University of Amsterdam before earning her PhD from the University of Groningen.
Versteeg's research centers on the cultural transformations of 19th and early 20th century Spain, particularly examining how industrialization, modernization, and emerging mass culture reshaped Spanish society. Her work frequently explores the intersection of gender, performance, and commercialization, with particular focus on female performers in literature and theater. She has developed a specialized expertise in the works of Emilia Pardo Bazán and has made significant contributions to our understanding of Spanish realism, gender dynamics, and periodical culture during Spain's transition to modernity.
Her recent publications reveal a consistent scholarly trajectory examining gender representation, performance culture, and literary responses to social change. Versteeg's work demonstrates how 19th century Spanish writers grappled with issues that remain relevant today, including gender violence, women's rights, migration, and social justice. Her scholarship bridges literary analysis with cultural history, offering nuanced perspectives on how Spanish literature reflected and shaped societal transformations during a period of profound change.
Professor Versteeg has established herself as a leading authority in peninsular Spanish cultural studies, with her work appearing in prestigious journals such as Anales Galdosianos, Romance Quarterly, and Bulletin of Spanish Studies. Her research has been instrumental in highlighting connections between historical Spanish cultural production and contemporary social concerns.
In addition to her research, Versteeg teaches courses on 19th and early 20th century Spanish Peninsular Cultural Studies, Cultural and Literary Theory, Realism, Performance, and Trauma and Memory of the Spanish Civil War. Her teaching reflects her research interests, connecting historical literary production with contemporary theoretical frameworks and social issues.
