Margot Schwalbe is an Assistant Professor of Biology at Lake Forest College, specializing in Neuroethology, Animal Physiology, and Sensory Biology. Her research focuses on how fish sense and move in their environment, particularly studying the lateral line system and biomechanics. She holds a PhD from the University of Rhode Island and postdoctoral training at Tufts University. She teaches courses including Organismal Biology, Animal Physiology, and Neuroscience.
Research Interests: Her work explores how fish use sensory systems like the lateral line to detect water flow and navigate unsteady environments. Key projects include studying schooling behavior in giant danios and swimming stability in bluegill sunfish. She also investigates sensory adaptations in Lake Malawi cichlids.
Publications: Schwalbe has published extensively on fish sensory biology and biomechanics, with recent work on lateral line function in schooling and predator avoidance. Her studies use electrophysiology and fluorescent staining techniques to analyze neuromast distribution and function.
