Margo Schlanger is the Wade H. and Dores M. McCree Collegiate Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School. She specializes in civil rights, constitutional law, and criminal justice reform. Schlanger has held significant roles in government, including advising the USDA’s Discrimination Financial Assistance Program and serving as the head of civil rights at the Department of Homeland Security during the Obama administration. She founded the Civil Rights Litigation Clearinghouse, a critical resource for tracking civil rights lawsuits. Her research focuses on disability rights, prison conditions, and systemic reform.
Education:

- Juris Doctor (Yale Law School), recipient of the Vinson Prize for clinical casework.
Research interests include the intersection of disability and incarceration, federal civil rights enforcement, and litigation strategies for systemic change. Schlanger has contributed to landmark cases such as Hamama v. Adducci (protecting Iraqi nationals from deportation) and authored influential works like Incarceration and the Law. She is a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar for 2025-2026.
