Margit Legler

Margit Legler is a Professor of Historical Dance and Period Acting Techniques at the Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien (Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna), holding roles since 2015. She teaches in dance, early music, and opera programs, specializing in historical performance practices. Her career spans international engagements as a dancer, singer, and director in baroque and classical productions.

Education includes extensive training in classical ballet, modern dance (Horton/Graham techniques), flamenco, and historical performance studies. Notable mentors include Violanta Stromeyer, Susan Dennis Gabriel, and Dene Barnett. She holds a diploma in speech therapy from AKH Wien (2006), focusing on breath techniques and vocal therapy.

Research interests center on integrating historical dance, acting, and vocal techniques into modern performance. She founded ensembles like L’Azione Teatrale (historical theater) and Les plaisirs de la danse (historical dance), staging works by Gluck, Gassmann, and Purcell. Key productions include Zauberflöte (1994), Il Parnaso Confuso (1998, 2012), and L’Etearco (2022).

Teaching spans workshops in 17th/18th-century acting and dance across Europe and Japan. She has held positions at the Vienna State Opera Ballet Academy (2010–2020) and Salzburg Mozarteum’s Opera Institute. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary training for singers and dancers in historical contexts.
