Dr. Margery Fee is a Professor in the Department of English Language & Literatures and holds key roles at the University of British Columbia (UBC), including chairing the Canadian Studies Program and directing the interdisciplinary Arts One program. She earned her PhD in Canadian literary history from the University of Toronto (1981). Her research focuses on Canadian literature, Indigenous studies, and sociolinguistics, with notable contributions to First Nations literatures and critiques of cultural appropriation. Fee has been recognized for her teaching excellence, including the Margaret Fulton Award (2005/06) and repeated Just Desserts Awards from the Alma Mater Society. Her work bridges literary scholarship with community engagement, such as projects linking university and elementary students through oral storytelling. Fee’s interdisciplinary leadership has shaped UBC’s academic landscape, particularly through Arts One, which emphasizes critical thinking and collaborative learning.
Her research explores intersections of law, language, and identity, as seen in studies like White Civility and Aboriginal Law/Epistemology (2009) and Racializing Narratives: Obesity, Diabetes, and the “Aboriginal” Thrifty Genotype (2006). She has also contributed to lexicography, including the Dictionary of Canadianisms. Fee’s editorial work in Canadian Literature magazine and numerous peer-reviewed articles reflect her commitment to fostering scholarly dialogue and student engagement.
