Margarita Gomila Ribas

Dr. Margarita Gomila Ribas is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Sciences, University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). She holds a PhD in Biology (2007) with the European Doctor title and the Extraordinary Doctorate Award. Her academic roles include Secretary of the Faculty of Sciences (since 2020), Director of the Master’s in Advanced Microbiology (since 2023), and Secretary of the Doctoral Program in Environmental and Biomedical Microbiology (since 2023).

Her research focuses on microbial molecular ecology, biodiversity, taxonomy, phylogeny, systematics, and genomics in both clinical and environmental contexts. She has conducted pre- and post-doctoral research in institutions across England, Germany, and Sweden.

Her scientific work includes over 75 publications, more than 80 conference presentations, and over 2,400 citations (Scopus h-index: 28). The research articles span areas such as microbial genomics, environmental microbiology, clinical microbiology, and bacterial systematics, reflecting a strong interdisciplinary approach with applications in public health, ecology, and biotechnology.

She has extensive teaching experience across undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervising over 30 master’s theses and 5 doctoral theses (currently supervising 3). She leads or co-leads multiple national and international research projects and is active in academic service, including roles in the Spanish Society of Microbiology and as Spanish Ambassador for the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). She is a member of two consolidated R&D groups: Biodiversitat Balear (GBB) and Microbiologia i Biotecnologia Ambiental (MICROBIAM).
