Margaret Mead (1901-1978) was a prominent cultural anthropologist, author, and public speaker affiliated with The New School, where she taught for over two decades. Her work focused on human culture, sexuality, and the social construction of behavior. She is best known for challenging biological determinism in studies of warfare and gender roles.
Her influential essay Warfare is Only an Invention—Not a Biological Necessity argued that aggression is culturally learned rather than innate. Mead's interdisciplinary approach bridged anthropology with public policy and education, making her a key figure in 20th-century social sciences.
