Margaret Estapa is an Assistant Professor of Oceanography at the University of Maine’s School of Marine Sciences, based at the Darling Marine Center. Her research focuses on ocean biogeochemistry, particularly particle-mediated carbon cycling and the biological carbon pump, using novel optical sensors and interdisciplinary field observations. She earned her PhD in 2011 from the University of Maine.
Her work emphasizes understanding physical, biological, and chemical processes across ocean boundaries, with a focus on spatiotemporal resolution of particle dynamics. She develops cutting-edge tools like optical sediment traps and collaborates on major initiatives like the EXPORTS program. Courses taught include Chemical Oceanography and special topics on marine carbon dioxide removal.
Recent research highlights include investigating storm impacts on particle fluxes post-spring blooms, advancing sediment trap technologies, and analyzing mesopelagic carbon budgets. Her lab supports undergraduate and graduate students in optical and chemical oceanography, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches.
