Margaret B. Wan is a Professor in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at the University of Utah, specializing in Chinese literature and cultural history. Her research bridges oral and written traditions, focusing on vernacular narratives, drum ballads, and regional literature in Ming-Qing China.

Her scholarly work examines the interplay between print culture, spatial analysis, and individual agency in Chinese vernacular short stories, particularly through the anthology Marvels Old and New (Jin gu qiguan, 1650s). She has co-edited volumes on Yangzhou literature and the oral-written interplay, and her book Regional Literature and the Transmission of Culture (2020) explores drum ballads as cultural artifacts.
