Mareike Fischer

Prof. Dr. Mareike Fischer is a Professor at the University of Greifswald, affiliated with the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science. She serves as Chair of the Audit Committee for B.Sc. and M.Sc. Biomathematics programs, academic advisor for these programs, and coordinator of ERASMUS and other international stays. Research Interests: Mareike Fischer's work bridges theoretical and applied research in Biomathematics. Her group explores Phylogenetics and Population Genetics, using Discrete Mathematics, Combinatorics, and Graph Theory to model evolutionary processes and biological networks. Probability Theory and Group Theory underpin her analyses, with opportunities for students to engage in programming, data analysis, or theoretical studies.

Advising and Grants: Fischer has guided numerous students in Biomathematics, including PhD candidates like Michelle Galla and Kristina Wicke. Her research is supported by the BMBF-funded project "In Darwin's Footsteps" (grant 01PL12039), which reduces dropout rates through interdisciplinary excursions, lectures, and mentoring programs.

Labs and Teams: She leads the "In Darwin's Footsteps" initiative, organizing excursions to natural history museums, introductory lectures, and graduate presentations. Since 2018, she has expanded this with a mentoring program pairing first-year students with advanced peers. Her team also includes collaborators with biologists and computer scientists, and she co-developed software tools like PhyloDec and FairShapley for phylogenetic analysis.
