Marcus Young is a Research Fellow in Geospatial Software Engineering for Transport Systems at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the Transportation Research Group. His work focuses on GIS applications in public transport and active travel, including the development of open-source tools like the Station Demand Forecasting Tool and GB Traffic Data Explorer. He currently contributes to the Horizon Europe-funded QuieterRail project, addressing railway noise and vibration mitigation through system optimization tools.
Education includes a PhD in Transport Geography from Southampton (2014), an MSc in GIS from Ulster University (part-time), and a BSc in Aquatic Biology from Aberystwyth University. His career transitioned from IT roles at the University of Cambridge to academia, emphasizing open-source software and transport analytics.
Research interests include rail demand modeling, spatial analysis for transport infrastructure, and open-source tool development. Recent publications span active travel network analysis, historical rail network modeling, and economic impact assessments of rail interventions. He has received recognition for his MSc research on GIS contributions.
Teaching involves modules on the Ulster University’s PgDip/MSc GIS program, including Web-based GIS and GIS Databases. He develops tutorials and materials for open-source tools like GeoServer and OpenTripPlanner, and collaborates on educational resources such as a bus company elasticity simulator game.
Grants include Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) funding for converting his rail demand research into an automated forecasting tool. Key projects include the Solent Future Transport Zone and the QuieterRail initiative. He actively contributes to interdisciplinary transport research, bridging academic and industry applications.
