Professor Marcus Smith is a Professor of Applied Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Chichester's Institute of Applied Sciences and a Visiting Research Fellow in the Department of Neuroimaging at King's College London. With over 37 years of experience since joining the institution in 1984, he has established himself as a leading researcher at the intersection of sport science, neuroscience, and music performance.
His academic progression includes:
- 2021-present: Professor of Applied Sport and Exercise Science
- 2012-2021: Reader in Sport and Exercise Physiology
- 2006-present: Principal Lecturer in Exercise Physiology
- 1998: PhD (accredited by University of Southampton)
- 1984-1987: BA Sport Studies with Commendation
Professor Smith's research focuses on drumming as an intervention in clinical trials, the physiological demands of rock drumming, and manipulation of body mass in sports performance. His groundbreaking work with the Clem Burke Drumming Project has resulted in publications in top journals including PNAS and Nature Scientific Reports, examining neuroplasticity in autism and elite sports performance, securing over £7 million in research funding.
His research portfolio shows a clear evolution from traditional sports science (particularly boxing physiology) to innovative interdisciplinary work connecting music, neuroscience, and developmental disorders. Recent publications emphasize drumming interventions for autism, neuroplasticity mechanisms, and cognitive benefits of musical performance, demonstrating consistent scholarly impact across multiple domains.
Professor Smith has received significant recognition including:
- Over £7 million in research funding
- Public engagement at the 2023 Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition
- Support for Owain Wyn Evans 24-hour Drumathon (2021) raising £4 million for BBC Children in Need
