Dr. Marcus Sheaves is a Professor and Director of Special Projects at James Cook University's College of Science and Engineering. He leads the Estuary and Coastal Wetland Ecology Research Group and the Marine Data Technology Hub, focusing on ecosystem and fisheries ecology in tropical coastal systems. His research spans mangrove ecosystems, AI-driven environmental problem-solving, and critical decision-making frameworks for conservation.
Key research areas include mangrove biodiversity restoration, tidal wetland connectivity, and the ecological roles of marine habitats. He has led over 75 peer-reviewed publications in the last five years, with a focus on climate impacts, marine megafauna tracking, and innovative technologies like deep learning for underwater habitat analysis.
Collaborations span institutions in Australia and the Asia-Pacific, addressing global challenges like coastal wetland degradation and marine spatial planning. His work integrates ecological data with policy-relevant solutions, such as environmental flow requirements and restoration strategies for degraded ecosystems.
Dr. Sheaves emphasizes place-based deliberation for sustainable coastal futures, particularly in the Great Barrier Reef region. His research outputs highlight the economic and ecological value of mangroves while advancing computational tools for fisheries management and marine biodiversity conservation.
