Prof Marcus Harmes is a Professor in the UniSQ College (Pathways) at the University of Southern Queensland. His research focuses on cultural history of education, education in popular culture, legal history, and religious studies. He teaches in the Tertiary Preparation Program and supervises Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students in Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Education, and professional studies programs.
Education: Holds a DipModLang (UNE, 2010), BA (Qld, 2002), BA(Hons) (Qld, 2004), and PhD (Qld, 2010). His qualifications span modern languages, humanities, and historical research.
Research Interests: Explores intersections between education, media, and history through works analyzing Doctor Who, historical narratives in TV, and institutional pedagogy. His recent work includes studies on music education in Australian universities, nuclear power in media, and medieval legal practices in popular culture.
Publications: Over 150 peer-reviewed works across cultural history, media studies, and education policy. Notable books include *Nuns in Popular Culture* (2024) and *Doctor Who and Science* (2021). His articles frequently bridge historical analysis with contemporary media critiques.
Supervision: Advised over 30 HDR students on topics ranging from policing strategies to medieval witch hunts and energy justice narratives. Current projects include studies on supervisor skills in research education and textual queer-coding in Star Trek.
Affiliations: Associate Director Research in UniSQ College. Active in academic networks such as the Australian and New Zealand Association for Medieval and Early Modern Studies (ANZAMEMS).
