Prof. Marcus Deschauer is a senior physician and professor at the Klinikum rechts der Isar, Technical University of Munich. He specializes in neuromuscular diseases, particularly hereditary forms requiring gene-specific treatments. He leads the outpatient clinic for muscle diseases and hereditary neurological diseases, as well as the electroneuromyography laboratory and the Center for Rare Neurological Diseases.
Education and Career: Studied medicine in Erlangen (graduated 1996). Key roles include establishing the Muscle Laboratory in Halle (Saale) and conducting research on mitochondrial diseases at Newcastle University (2002) via a European Neurological Society fellowship. Certified as a neurologist, he held senior roles in Halle until 2014 before joining Munich.
Research Focus: Molecular genetic studies of metabolic myopathies, genotype-phenotype relationships in mitochondrial diseases, and genetic aspects of neurological disorders. Authored the German Society of Neurology's 'Diagnosis of Myopathies' guideline and contributed to the 'Mitochondrial Diseases' guideline.
Awards: Received the Felix Jerusalem Prize (2005) for his habilitation thesis on metabolic myopathies.
Leadership: Oversees clinical and research activities in rare neurological diseases and coordinates interdisciplinary teams in neurology and genetics.
