Marcos Diniz Guimaraes

Marcos H. D. Guimaraes is an Associate Professor at the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials within the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Groningen. He leads the Opto-Spintronics of Quantum Materials research group, focusing on light-electron spin interactions in atomically thin materials. His roles include membership in the Young Academy Groningen and the Nanolab NL Scientific Board.

Education: BSc/MSc in Physics (Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil), PhD in Physics (University of Groningen, 2015). Postdoctoral research at Cornell University (USA) and Eindhoven University of Technology (Netherlands).

Research Interests: Spintronics, magneto-optics, 2D materials, nanodevices, and ultrafast phenomena. Key achievements include ERC Starting Grant (2023), NWO VENI (2017), and pioneering studies on optically-controlled magnetization dynamics in van der Waals materials.

Awards/Grants: NWO Rubicon Fellowship (2014), Kavli Institute Fellowship (USA, 2014), ERC Starting Grant (2023), NWO VENI Grant (2017).

Lab Focus: Developing atomically thin photodetectors, spintronic devices, and studying magnon dynamics via orbital Rashba-Edelstein effects. Active in science outreach through Young Academy initiatives.
