Marco Santoro is a Full Professor of Sociology at the Department of the Arts, University of Bologna, affiliated with the School of Letters. He holds a degree in Political Sciences (1988, Università Cattolica di Milano) and a PhD in Sociology (1993, Università di Trento). His academic journey includes post-doctoral research at Bologna (1993-1995), lecturer positions at Università Cattolica di Milano and Università di Bologna, and promotion to Full Professor in 2017. He has held visiting fellowships at institutions like University of East Anglia, Goldsmiths College (London), Columbia University, LSE, and EHESS (Paris).
His research focuses on cultural sociology, institutional analysis, and the sociology of political and artistic fields. Key areas include mafia studies, the global circulation of Gramsci’s ideas, Bourdieu’s sociology of art, and the sociology of cinema and music. He has directed major research projects such as the EU-funded 'Art Festivals and the European Public Culture' (2008-2010) and 'INTERCO-SSH' (2013-2017).
Prof. Santoro is a founding editor of Sociologica and co-founder of Studi Culturali. He serves on editorial boards of journals like Poetics and American Journal of Cultural Sociology. His work explores the interplay between cultural production, institutional structures, and historical processes, emphasizing reflexive methodologies in sociological research.
