Marco Ragni is a Professor and Head of the Professorship of Predictive Behavior Analysis at Chemnitz University of Technology (TU Chemnitz), Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. He is also the Scientific Director of the Center for Humans and Technology (Mensch und Technik) and coordinates the tri-university CHIM network. His academic affiliations include an adjunct professorship at the University of Freiburg and previous membership at the Danish Institute of Advanced Studies (DIAS).
His research lies at the intersection of computational cognitive science and artificial intelligence, focusing on modeling human reasoning, decision-making, and cognition. Key interests include predictive modeling of cognitive processes, knowledge representation, cognitive systems, and human-system interaction, particularly in teaming scenarios between humans and AI. He employs methods from machine learning, fMRI, TMS, and tDCS to study the neural underpinnings of thought.
The most recent publications reflect a consistent trend in understanding human reasoning through computational models, particularly in spatial, relational, and uncertain contexts. His work bridges cognitive theory with AI applications, emphasizing formal modeling, neural correlates, and human-AI collaboration. Themes include mental models, belief revision, hypothesis testing, and the integration of cognitive principles into intelligent systems.
Scientific Awards:
- DFG Heisenberg Fellowship (2015–2020)
Marco Ragni advises students and leads a research team including Dr. Clemens Bombach, Dr. Ying-Hsang Liu, and M.Sc. Daniel Brand. He has secured competitive research funding, notably through the DFG Heisenberg Program, and leads large interdisciplinary initiatives such as the CHIM network and the Cognitive Computation Labs. His work involves collaboration across computer science, psychology, and neuroscience.
He is associated with the Cognitive Computation Labs at the University of Freiburg and leads research activities within the Center for Humans and Technology at TU Chemnitz, focusing on intelligent systems that anticipate human cognition for effective human-machine teaming.
