Dr. Marco Helbich is an Associate Professor in Human Geography and Spatial Planning at Utrecht University's Faculty of Geosciences. His research bridges Geographic Information Science (GIScience) and health geography, focusing on how urban environments influence mental health through dynamic exposure analysis. Helbich joined Utrecht University in 2013 after completing a Humboldt Research Fellowship at Heidelberg University and a PhD (summa cum laude) from the University of Vienna.
- Education:
- PhD in Human Geography, University of Vienna (2009)
- Habilitation (Venia Legendi) in Human Geography, Heidelberg University (2015)
- Visiting Scholar, Louisiana State University (USA)
- Affiliations:
- Member of editorial boards for Health & Place, Journal of Transport and Land Use, and Annals of the American Association of Geographers
- Exposome-NL research consortium and Planetary Health initiative
Helbich's work emphasizes mobility-based health geographies, using geocomputational methods and deep learning to assess environmental exposures (e.g., green spaces, noise, air pollution). His ERC-funded research explores urban environmental stressors and their mental health impacts, with media attention and policy influence on evidence-based urban planning.
Key contributions include:
- Pioneering street view image analysis for environmental exposure assessment
- Linking residential mobility and life course dynamics to mental health outcomes
- Advocating for equitable urban design through digital twin applications
His grants include European Research Council funding and Austrian Academy of Sciences support. He actively mentors students and contributes to academic governance roles at Utrecht University.
