Marco Garrido is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Chicago. He is affiliated with the Department of Sociology and the Committee on International Relations. His research focuses on democracy, corruption, urbanization, and social inequality in Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, Cambodia, and Singapore. Garrido holds a B.A. from Harvard University (2000), an M.A. from the University of Notre Dame (2002), and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (2013).
His research interests include political sociology, urban sociology, and social theory. He examines how political institutions shape experiences of inequality and democracy, with a focus on the Global South. Key works include his 2019 book The Patchwork City: Class, Space, and Politics in Metro Manila and ongoing projects on corruption and democratic decline in the Philippines. He co-edits a volume on historical and ethnographic approaches to Philippine politics, challenging conventional narratives of the country’s political dynamics.
Garrido’s recent work explores the intersections of urban space and inequality, as well as the historical dimensions of corruption. His publications analyze democratic disenchantment, populism, and comparative historical sociology, emphasizing sociological explanations for complex social phenomena.
