Marcin Zawicki

Marcin Zawicki is a Professor at the Faculty of Painting, Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (ASP Gdańsk), where he has taught since 2010. He graduated with distinction from the same institution in 2010 and defended his doctoral thesis "Chorography" in 2015. In 2021, he received habilitation and became a full professor. Since 2022, he also runs the Guest Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw.

His research explores painting mediated through photography of sculptural realizations, examining material transformation across mediums. Core themes include the ontology of painterly matter and pre-verbal engagement with imagery, described as seeking the moment when painting "becomes the element that most deeply fulfills my assumptions."

Zawicki has received numerous awards including multiple Rector's Awards (2010–2019), honorable mentions at the Bielska Jesień Biennale (2013, 2019), and international recognition like the Strabag Artaward (2021). He was thrice nominated for Pomorskie Sztormy awards (2017–2019) and ranked 8th in the 2018 Kompas Młodych Sztuki ranking.

Key affiliations include membership in Gdańsk Cultural Council (since 2020), direction of independent Tajna Galeria (2018–2020), and collaborations with institutions like Institute of Urban Culture. His monumental installations (e.g., "Life", "Chorography") and set designs (e.g., film "The Forest") demonstrate interdisciplinary practice.
