Marcia Raggio

Marcia Raggio is a Professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at San Francisco State University and serves as the Audiology Clinic Coordinator. Her research, conducted in partnership with the UCSF Center for Integrative Neuroscience, focuses on speech processing in noise through the SFSU Audiology Laboratory. She holds leadership roles as Chair of the Speech Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board (appointed by Governors Jerry Brown and Gavin Newsom) and as a Member at Large of the American Academy of Audiology.

Dr. Raggio’s research integrates neuroscience and audiology to study auditory processing in hearing-impaired individuals. Her work examines temporal processing in the auditory cortex, neural plasticity, and cochlear implant effects, particularly in neonatal and long-deafened subjects. She also contributes to clinical audiology guidelines, hearing aid candidacy assessment, and legislative advocacy for audiology practices.

Recent publications highlight her interdisciplinary focus, spanning neurophysiological studies on auditory cortex responses, clinical guidelines for hearing aid use, and consumer education materials. Key trends include neural mechanisms of speech perception, sensory processing adaptations in deafness, and legislative advancements in audiology services.

As director of the SFSU Audiology Laboratory, Dr. Raggio leads research bridging basic neuroscience and clinical applications. Her advocacy work influences state-level audiology policies, and she maintains active certifications in audiology and hearing aid dispensing.
