Marcella Alsan is the Angelopoulos Professor of Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School (HKS). She holds a BA, MPH, and PhD from Harvard University, alongside an MD from Loyola University. Her research focuses on health inequality, particularly racial disparities in healthcare access and outcomes. Alsan co-authored landmark studies such as Does Diversity Matter for Health? and Tuskegee and the Health of Black Men, demonstrating the impact of physician diversity on preventive care utilization among African American men. She previously served on Stanford’s faculty and holds leadership roles at the Science Magazine editorial board and MIT’s Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab. Her awards include the MacArthur Fellowship and the Arrow Award for Best Paper in Health Economics. Alsan co-directs the Health Inequality Lab at HKS, addressing systemic barriers to equitable healthcare through interdisciplinary research.
Her work bridges economics, public health, and policy, with a focus on antimicrobial resistance, correctional healthcare, and pandemic response strategies. She has contributed to national dialogues on health equity in elections and advised on vaccine messaging during the COVID-19 pandemic. Alsan’s research emphasizes actionable solutions to reduce disparities through policy innovation and evidence-based interventions.
