Marcel Weil

Dr. Marcel Weil is a Research Group Leader at the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), where he leads the Research Group for Sustainable Energy Technologies. He is also affiliated with the Helmholtz Institute Ulm and serves as Principal Investigator and Board Member in the Cluster of Excellence for Post-Lithium Batteries (POLIS). His work integrates engineering, environmental science, and policy to support sustainable energy transitions.

Marcel Weil’s research focuses on sustainability analysis of electrochemical storage systems, particularly lithium-ion and post-lithium batteries (e.g., sodium-ion, magnesium). His work includes life cycle assessment (LCA), circular economy, recycling, resource availability, and socio-technical integration. He develops system analysis tools (MFA, LCA, LCC, MCDA) to guide early-stage technology development. His research is highly interdisciplinary, combining materials science, environmental engineering, and energy policy.

His recent publications (2023–2025) emphasize prospective LCA of emerging battery technologies, sustainability screening of sodium-ion systems, biomass-derived materials for energy storage, and methodological frameworks for sustainability assessment. The articles reflect a strong focus on data-driven environmental evaluation, circular design, and decision support for policymakers and industry.
