Dr. Marcel Keller serves as a scientific Assistant within the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Basel's Faculty of Humanities and Natural Sciences. He is affiliated with the IPNA (Integrative Prehistoric & Natural Science Archaeology) research group led by Prof. Dr. Verena Schünemann, where he conducts paleogenetic research at the intersection of archaeology, environmental science, and molecular biology.
His research focuses on paleogenetic analysis of ancient biological remains, with particular expertise in ancient pathogen evolution and zooarchaeological studies. Current investigations examine the circulation of Yersinia pestis during historical pandemics and biomolecular reconstructions of Pleistocene megafauna. His work integrates molecular techniques with archaeological context to understand human-environment interactions during critical historical transitions.
Dr. Keller's recent publications demonstrate strong output in high-impact venues, with three significant contributions in 2024-2025 focusing on ancient pathogen detection and paleogenetic analysis of archaeological specimens. His research is primarily supported through the ongoing bioVIstories project, which investigates biomolecular histories of the 6th century transition period.
As part of the Department of Environmental Sciences, Dr. Keller contributes to Basel's vibrant research ecosystem that spans environmental archaeology, Quaternary science, and biomolecular analysis. His work exemplifies the department's interdisciplinary approach to understanding environmental change through both contemporary and historical perspectives.
